I am probably going to go out and but a new USB WiFi antenna tomorrow and I would like to know what brands people seem to like. In one of the responses someone commented that they are not a fan of Netgear WiFi equipment.

I seem to remember with Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 on a desktop computer if I just plugged in a USB WiFi antenna Windows would recognize it and go into its routine but this is not happening with my Windows 8.0 computer so once again I am left scratching my head. There is also no mention of or reference to anything related to WiFi in Device Manager. The Wikihow article that was posted to this thread was of no use to me because all there seems to be in the way of built-in services is Ethernet LAN with no wireless or WiFi to be found. With that said the WLan Autoconfig service is set to Automatic startup type. There is no built in WiFi on this computer. Something I may have left out of or not been clear on in my original post is that this computer is a desktop computer and not a laptop. Hi Everyone, thanks for all the great tips and suggestions. Has anyone had this problem with Netgear (or other WiFi antennaes) just randomly dropping the connection? Is this a known issue with Netgear? I am thinking of spending $20 or $30 and just replacing the antennae but I don't want to wind up with the same issue after spending my money. Running a network cable from the router to my computer would completely fix the problem but sadly is not an option because my girlfriend pitches a fit every time she sees wires. The only way I have found to restore the WiFi is to uninstall and then re-install the Netgear WiFi utility and I am getting very tired of having to do this. When I open the Netgear utility and try to refresh the settings it refuses to take them. Once every two or three days the WiFi connection just drops as if the Netgear antennae has somehow forgotten what is is supposed to do. I have tired to find updates for the antennae with no success and my calls and emails to Netgear give no help. I am using the utility that came on a CD with the WiFi antennae to manage the WiFi in my computer. The distance from the router to my computer (as the crow flies) is approx 30 feet and there are 3 walls in between. Supposedly the unit is rated at 450 Mbps. It's an Ubee modem/router which I have never heard of.

The modem/router I am using is some sort of generic or house brand that I got when I got Cox TV and Internet. The antennae is a USB type that plugs into a USB port on my computer. The WiFi antennae is a Netgear N300 (I think their stock number is WNR3100).

The computer is running Windows 8.0 with all the updates installed. I have an HP Desktop computer with the AMD A4 CPU and 4 Gigs of RAM. I am having a problems with the WiFi in my condo where the USB WiFi antennae keeps dropping the signal and I am out of ideas.
